The Susquehanna Union Volunteers
Marshall Van Scoten, Edited By James Knarr
"The Susquehanna Union Volunteers" is a revised edition of the 1885 first-hand history written by Co. H member Marshall Van Scoten, "The Conception, Organization and Campaigns of 'Company H,' 4th Penn. Reserve, Volunteer Corps, 33 Regiment in Line, 1861–5. "This book tells the first-hand story of Co. H and offers a unique view of the company’s travails both on the march and in battle at such monumental engagements as Gaines’ Mill, Second Bull Run, Fredericksburg, and Antietam. Mixing battle narrative with soldiers’ anecdotes, it follows the story of a group of nearly one-hundred men from Susquehanna County, ultimately to victory over the forces of secession. In addition to shortening the 1885 edition’s title, this volume augments the 1885 edition with a new introduction, explanatory notes, an afterword, and two appendices that provide biographies of the specific men who served in Company H and some of the letters they wrote home.
The Susquehanna County Historical Society has a limited number of signed copies for sale. A portion
proceeds will be generously donated by the editor to the Society.
