From early years Robert Bauer (1857-1919) and his band and orchestra were welcome addidtions to the music-loving community of Montrose. Alfred C. Uptegrove played with Bauer's Band for many years after he left Montrose. "Al" was a member of the old "Keystone Band" of Montrose along with Jim Stoddard, piccalo; Vern Frink, solo alto; Fitch Leonard, 1st alto; Marcey Hedden, 2nd alto; Lou Herrick, trombone; Al Rice, baratone; Jim Harrington, 1st tuba; Harry Mack, bass drum; Bert Shay, snare durm; Al Uptegrove, 1st cornet.

Robert Bauer also had charge of the Harford Soldiers' Orphan School band and a report from the Orphan School, for the year 1896, says the following: "Prof. Bauer, our efficient band instructor, brought his famous band from Scranton and gave the children a full day's entertainment without charge, which was much appreciated, as his usual charge for a day with his full band is one hundred dollars. Prof. Bauer is so proud of his boy band at Harford, that he takes pleasure in having people see and hear them and never misses being with them when we have a time."
