Two articles in the Montrose Democrat for 7 January 1874 state that "Our Cornet Band is taking music lessons from a teacher from Binghamton. They discourse some excellent music." And, "The Brooklyn Cornet Band has procured the services of Prof. H.E. Cogwell, to conduct a Convention in Vocal Music, commencing Tuesday, January 6th, 1874, to continue four days, with three sessions each day, and closing with a grand concert, Friday evening, January 9th, '74. Books, (The Coronation), will be furnished for the use of the class, without charge. At the concert the Brooklyn Cornet Band will present some fine music, (selected for the occasion), under the direction of Prof. E.M. Parmalee, of Binghamton, New York. Tickets for Convention and concert: Gentleman, one dollar, Ladies, fifty cents, tickets to Concert, 25 cents. No doubts need be entertained of a pleasant and profitable time for all lovers of music."
In August 1874 the Democrat reported on the Soldier's Encampment: "About 200 formed in ranks after dinner [at Heart Lake], headed by the Brooklyn Band, and went through with a partial drill as well as they could with sticks for guns, under the command of Col. Telford of Susquehanna Depot."
In the Montrose Democrat for 7 June 1876 is the following: "Our Band are engaged by the Knight Templars, of Scranton, to play in Philadelphia on Wednesday and Thursday next, at a grand parade. They expect to go Monday, Twenty-one in number. They get $100 and expenses for four days."
